Cold-Deformed (Seamless/Longitudinal) Thick-Walled Steel Pipes

Seamless cold-deformed steel pipe is designed for pipelines, structures, parts of machines, automotive, aircraft engineering, shipbuilding, chemical, and mechanical engineering industries, cryogenic engineering, fuel and energy plants and other technical purposes. They are also widely used in the shipbuilding industry.

Depending on the ratio of pipe diameter (D) to wall thickness (s), cold-deformed pipes are divided into:

  • thin-walled steel pipes, D/s from 12.5 to 40 and pipes with diameter of 20mm and less and wall thickness of 1.5mm;
  • thick-walled steel pipes, D/s from 6 to 12.5;
  • special thin-walled steel pipes, D/s over 40 and pipes with diameter of 20mm and wall thickness of 0.5mm and less;
  • special thick-walled steel pipes with D/s less than 6.

Thick-walled cold-deformed steel pipes are manufactured with heat treatment. Thin-walled cold-deformed steel pipes are manufactured without heat treatment. D/s ratio of these cold-rolled pipes is equal to 50 and more.

According to the length, cold-deformed pipes as per GOST 8734-78 are divided into:

  • off-gauge length from 1.5m to 11.5m;
  • specific cut length from 4.5m to 9m with limit deviations in length +10mm;
  • length divisible by the length of cut from 1.5m to 9m with 5mm allowance per cut.

According to quality standards, thick- and thin-walled cold-deformed pipes as per GOST 8734-78 are divided into B, C, E, F groups:

  • B - including standardization of chemical analysis, from steel grades according to GOSTs1050,14959,4543,19281;
  • C - including standardization of chemical analysis and mechanical properties, from steel grades according to GOSTs1050,14959,4543 and GOST19281. Requirements of mechanical properties shall comply with the requirements of applicable standards for steel;
  • E - supplied only with standardization of hydraulic test pressure;
  • F - after special heat treatment. Steel grades, conditions of heat treatment and norms of mechanical properties are specified by documents approved in accordance with the established process.
